The end of a tenancy
At the end of a lease, tenants want their bond back and landlords want the property ready for the next tenant. Small repairs are often the gap between the two. This guide covers common items. For rights and obligations, check Consumer Affairs Victoria guidance.
Common repairs
- Holes from hooks, picture nails and wall plugs
- Door damage, including holes in hollow-core doors
- Torn flyscreens
- Broken blinds
- Loose towel rails and fixtures
- Mouldy silicone
- Damaged cupboard doors and hinges
- Scuffed paint
For tenants
Repair what you damaged with proper patching and paint. Fair wear and tear is not usually the tenant’s responsibility, but check current guidance.
For landlords
Use the gap between tenants to do maintenance: re-silicone, fix doors, refresh paint and check safety items.
