Window & Flyscreen Repairs

Windows in older South Gippsland homes have seen a lot of weather. Timber sashes swell and stick, sash cords break, catches stop locking and putty falls out. Newer aluminium windows have their own issues: rollers wear, catches break and flyscreens tear. And flyscreens everywhere get pushed out by cats, punctured by dogs and torn by kids.

Leongatha Handyman repairs windows and flyscreens in homes, rentals and holiday houses across Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Meeniyan, Inverloch and the surrounding district.

Flyscreen repairs

  • Re-meshing torn or damaged flyscreens
  • Replacing damaged frames
  • Making new flyscreens to fit existing windows
  • Pet-resistant mesh options
  • Fitting screen door mesh
  • Replacing screen clips, springs and handles

Most screens can be re-meshed in place or taken away and returned.

Window repairs

  • Sticking timber sashes
  • Broken sash cords on double-hung windows
  • Window catches and locks
  • Aluminium sliding window rollers and tracks
  • Winders on awning windows
  • Draught seals and weather strips
  • Window sill repairs (see carpentry)

Older timber windows

Double-hung sash windows are common in period homes in Leongatha, Korumburra and Mirboo North. They are beautiful but need maintenance: sash cords break, the sashes get painted shut and the timber swells. We free stuck sashes, replace cords and adjust stops so the windows run smoothly.

Draughts

Windows that do not seal properly let in cold air all winter. We fit seals and weather strips to reduce draughts and keep heat in.

Window locks

Window locks improve security and are often requested for rentals. We fit keyed locks to timber and aluminium windows.

Glass

We do not replace window glass. A glazier can do this. We can repair the frame and hardware.

Flyscreens in South Gippsland

Flyscreens get plenty of work here. In summer they keep out flies from nearby paddocks and mosquitoes from the river flats and wetlands around Meeniyan, Tarwin Lower and Inverloch. Wind tears them, pets push through them, and sun makes old mesh brittle. On the coast, salt corrodes aluminium frames and steel corner pieces.

We re-mesh existing frames when they are sound, and make new screens when frames are bent, corroded or missing. Mesh options include standard fibreglass, heavier pet-resistant mesh and aluminium. Pet mesh is worth considering for doors and low windows where dogs and cats jump up.

Sliding screen and security doors

Screen doors that jump off their tracks, drag or will not latch usually need new rollers, a cleaned track and adjustment. In coastal towns, sand in the track is the usual cause. We replace rollers, adjust the door and fit new latches where the old ones have failed.

Timber windows

Older weatherboard homes in Leongatha, Korumburra and Loch often still have timber double-hung or casement windows. Common problems:

  • Broken sash cords. The window will not stay up. We replace cords and rebalance the sash.
  • Painted shut. Years of paint seal the sash. We free it carefully.
  • Swollen timber. In wet winters, sashes swell and stick. We ease them.
  • Rotten sills. Water sits on flat sills and rots them. Small areas can be repaired with timber or epoxy filler; badly rotted sills are replaced.
  • Loose putty and beads. We re-secure them to keep glass firm. Broken glass needs a glazier.

Aluminium windows

Aluminium sliders need clean tracks, working rollers and good seals. Catches and locks wear out and can be replaced.

Draughts

In exposed homes on the hills around Poowong, Mirboo North and Korumburra, old windows let in cold wind. New seals and caulking make a noticeable difference to comfort in winter.

Window locks

We fit keyed window locks and restrictors, which are useful in rentals and homes with young children.

Windows in South Gippsland homes

Older homes around Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North and Meeniyan often have original timber sash or casement windows. They are full of character but can stick, rattle, leak air and rot at the sill. Newer homes have aluminium windows with sliding sashes that drag when rollers wear out and locks that stop catching. Coastal homes at Inverloch and Venus Bay have the extra challenge of salt corrosion on hinges, winders and locks.

Leongatha Handyman repairs windows, replaces flyscreens and fits screens and security hardware for homes, rentals and holiday houses throughout the area.

Flyscreen repairs

Flies are part of summer in dairy country. A good set of screens makes a huge difference. We repair torn or bent screens, replace mesh, frames, splines and corner stakes, and make new screens to fit existing windows and doors. We use fibreglass mesh as standard, with options for heavier pet-resistant mesh, which suits homes with dogs and cats, and stainless mesh on the coast where salt quickly corrodes aluminium mesh.

Window repairs

  • freeing and easing sticking timber sashes and casements
  • replacing broken sash cords on double-hung windows
  • replacing worn rollers on aluminium sliding windows
  • replacing broken window locks and latches
  • repairing and replacing window winders on awning windows
  • fixing and replacing window stays and catches
  • re-puttying and painting timber windows where the putty has failed
  • repairing rotten sills and the bottom rail of timber frames

Sash windows in older homes

Double-hung sash windows rely on cords, pulleys and counterweights hidden in the frame. When a cord breaks, the sash drops or will not stay open. We remove the beads, access the weight pockets, replace the cords and rehang the sash so it runs smoothly. Paint-stuck sashes are freed carefully to avoid splitting old timber. Keeping these windows working preserves the character of older homes in Leongatha and Korumburra.

Draughts and heat loss

Leongatha winters are cold, and old windows leak warm air. We fit draught seals to sashes and casements, replace perished rubber seals on aluminium windows and seal gaps between frames and walls. These simple measures make rooms warmer and reduce heating costs. Heavier curtains and properly fitted blinds help too, and we can install them.

Window security

Windows are a common entry point for burglars, particularly at the back of the house. We fit keyed window locks, restrictors and security bolts that suit the frame. Window restrictors also prevent young children from falling out of upstairs or high windows, and in Victoria there are safety rules for windows in some situations; we can fit restrictors that limit the opening.

Security screens and doors

Security screens and doors are made to measure by specialist suppliers. We can measure and fit standard flyscreen doors, repair hinges, closers and locks on existing security doors, and replace mesh where it can be done on site.

Pet-resistant screens

Dogs and cats can quickly destroy standard flyscreen mesh. Pet mesh is a heavier vinyl-coated polyester that resists claws and pushing. It is slightly less see-through but lasts far longer in homes with pets, and is a common choice on rural properties around Dumbalk, Poowong and Loch where working dogs come and go.

Coastal homes

In Inverloch, Venus Bay and Tarwin Lower, salt air corrodes aluminium mesh, steel hinges and window hardware. We use stainless or marine-grade mesh and fittings that last longer near the sea. Holiday houses also suffer from sand in sliding door and window tracks; cleaning and lubricating tracks with a dry lubricant keeps them running smoothly.

Rentals

Victorian rental minimum standards include window coverings in bedrooms and living areas and windows that can be secured. Torn flyscreens, broken latches and missing curtains are common items on maintenance requests. We fix them quickly and send photos to property managers.

Glass

Glass replacement and glazing is the work of a glazier. If a pane is cracked or broken, we can make the window safe temporarily and recommend a glazier. Once the glass is replaced, we can repaint putty and frames.

Measuring and quoting

Send photos of the windows and screens, with rough sizes if you can. For new screens, we measure on site so they fit snugly.

Condensation and mould on windows

On cold mornings in Leongatha, Mirboo North and Korumburra, condensation streams down the inside of windows, particularly in bedrooms and bathrooms. Over a winter this water rots timber sills, grows black mould on frames and seals, and damages paint and plaster below. Wiping windows each morning, opening them for a short while each day and running exhaust fans helps. We repair rotten sills, clean and treat mould on frames, replace perished seals and repaint, and can fit window stays so windows can be left slightly open securely for ventilation.

Awning and casement windows

Awning windows with chain or scissor winders are common in homes from the 1980s onwards. Winders strip and break, and hinges seize, especially on the coast. We replace winders, hinges and stays with matching or compatible parts, and adjust the sash so it closes tightly and locks.

Sliding windows and doors

Aluminium sliding windows and doors depend on small rollers in the base. When rollers wear, the sash grinds on the track and becomes hard to move, and locks no longer line up. We replace the rollers, clean the tracks and adjust the locks. It is a quick job that makes a big difference.

Bundling window jobs

Window and screen jobs often come in groups: a few torn screens, a sticking door, a broken latch. Booking them together means fewer trips and lets us bring the right mesh and parts.

Screen doors

Hinged and sliding screen doors are often the first thing to wear out on a busy back door. We replace closers, latches, rollers and mesh, rehang sagging doors and fit pet doors into screen panels so dogs and cats can come and go without tearing the mesh. On farms, where working dogs and kids run in and out all day, a sturdy screen door is worth the effort.
