Two seasons of risk
South Gippsland is known for rain, but it also has fire seasons and severe storms. The February 2024 storm that hit Mirboo North brought down huge numbers of trees and caused widespread damage. In dry summers, grass and bush fires are a risk in rural areas. Both call for preparation around the home.
This guide covers practical handyman jobs. For bushfire planning, follow current CFA advice and check your own risk.
Before summer
- Clean gutters of dry leaves
- Remove leaves and debris from around the house and under decks
- Move firewood, timber and rubbish away from the house
- Check flyscreens for holes and gaps
- Seal gaps around eaves, vents and doors where embers could enter
- Make sure gates open freely for access
Before storm season
- Secure outdoor furniture, trampolines and loose items
- Check fences and gates are firm
- Make sure downpipes are connected and clear
- Check that doors and windows close and latch properly
After a storm
After a storm, stay away from fallen power lines and call the relevant service. Once safe, we can help with fence repairs, gutters, flyscreens and small repairs. Fallen trees need an arborist, and roof damage may need a roofer or the SES.
