Aged Care & Disability Rails

Most people want to stay in their own home for as long as they can. In South Gippsland that often means a house with a few steps at the front door, a bath with a shower over it, a toilet tucked into a narrow room and a back veranda down to the garden. Small changes, made early, can make those homes much safer: a rail beside the toilet, a rail in the shower, a handrail on the back steps, a lever handle instead of a round knob.

Leongatha Handyman installs grab rails and home safety modifications for older residents, people with disability, people recovering from surgery and their families across Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Meeniyan, Inverloch and the surrounding district.

What we install

  • Grab rails beside toilets
  • Grab rails in showers and over baths
  • Shower seats fixed to the wall
  • Hand-held shower rail brackets at a suitable height (no plumbing changes)
  • Handrails on front and back steps
  • Hallway and stair handrails
  • Rails at doorways and on verandas
  • Lever handles to replace knobs
  • Door stops and hold-open devices
  • Non-slip strips on steps
  • Lowered hooks, rails and shelves for easier reach
  • Small timber ramps over low thresholds where suitable

Rails must be fixed properly

A grab rail is only useful if it will hold a person’s full weight when they slip. A rail screwed into plasterboard with standard plugs can pull out at the worst moment. We fix every rail into timber studs, noggings or solid masonry, or use fixings rated for the purpose. Where there is no stud in the right place, we discuss options such as a different rail position or a rail designed for that situation.

Positioning

Rail positions depend on the person using them. Height, which hand is stronger, how they move from sitting to standing, and where they need support all matter. Where an occupational therapist has made recommendations, we follow their specifications. Where there is no OT report, we use common guidelines and talk with you and the person who will use the rail before drilling.

Working with OTs, providers and families

Many of our rail installations come through families, occupational therapists or care providers. We can:

  • Work from an OT’s specification and drawings
  • Provide a written quote for approval
  • Send photos of completed installations
  • Coordinate access with family members or carers

If you are using a Home Care Package, NDIS funding or another program, check with your provider about how they want the work quoted and invoiced. We can supply the quote and invoice they need.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are where most home falls happen. Wet tiles, stepping over a bath edge and getting up from a low toilet are all risky. The most common changes are:

  • A rail beside the toilet to help with sitting and standing
  • A vertical rail at the shower entry
  • A horizontal or angled rail inside the shower
  • A fold-down shower seat
  • A hand-held shower set on a rail so it can be used seated

Steps and verandas

Many homes in the district are built up off the ground with steps at the front and back. A sturdy handrail on both sides of the steps, non-slip treads and good lighting make a real difference. We also repair soft or uneven steps, which are a common trip hazard on older verandas.

Small changes that help

  • Replacing round door knobs with lever handles
  • Moving robe hooks and towel rails lower
  • Fitting door stops so doors do not swing into walkers
  • Securing loose rugs or recommending they be removed
  • Adding shelving at reachable heights in kitchens and laundries

Respect and patience

We work in people’s homes, often with older residents who may be nervous about tradespeople. We take our time, explain what we are doing, clean up thoroughly and make sure everything is right before we leave.

Staying at home in South Gippsland

South Gippsland has an older population than Melbourne, and many people want to stay in the home and town they know for as long as possible, whether that is a house in Leongatha close to the hospital and shops, a farmhouse outside Dumbalk, or a unit in Korumburra or Meeniyan. Small changes to the home can make a big difference to safety and independence. A grab rail beside the toilet, a handrail on the back steps or better lighting on the path can be the difference between staying at home and a fall that changes everything.

We install safety aids for older people, people living with disability, people recovering from surgery and families caring for loved ones. We work carefully, explain what we are doing and leave the home clean and tidy.

Working with occupational therapists and providers

Many people come to us after an occupational therapist (OT) has assessed their home and recommended specific modifications. An OT report usually includes the type, length and position of grab rails, the height of handrails, and other changes. We follow the OT’s specifications closely, and if something cannot be installed as specified because of the wall construction or layout, we contact you or the OT before going ahead.

If you are receiving support through a Home Care Package, the Commonwealth Home Support Programme or the NDIS, home modifications may be funded. Your provider or plan manager will advise what is covered and how quotes and invoices need to be prepared. We can supply itemised quotes and invoices to suit.

What we install

  • grab rails beside toilets, in showers and next to baths
  • shower rails and fold-down shower seats
  • handrails on internal and external stairs and steps
  • rails along hallways and at entry doors
  • toilet surrounds and frames supplied by you or your provider
  • lever handles to replace round door knobs that are hard to grip
  • non-slip treatments on steps where suitable
  • small ramps and threshold ramps supplied by your provider
  • hand-held shower brackets and adjustable rails (fixing only; plumbing changes need a plumber)
  • improved door hardware, such as easy-to-use locks and doors that open further

Fixing rails properly

A grab rail is only as strong as its fixing. It needs to take the full weight of a person who slips or loses their balance. Plasterboard alone is never enough. We fix rails into studs, noggings or solid masonry with fixings rated for the purpose. Where there is no framing in the right position, we install noggings behind the wall or use specialist fixings designed for grab rails.

In tiled bathrooms we drill through tiles with diamond bits to avoid cracking them and seal around each fixing so water cannot get into the wall cavity. This matters in older South Gippsland bathrooms where the waterproofing behind the tiles may already be past its best.

Rail height and position

Correct position is critical. A rail that is too high or too far away is not much help. Guidance for accessible bathrooms, and OT recommendations, set heights and positions based on how the rail will be used: pulling up from the toilet, steadying in the shower or stepping over the edge of a bath. We take the time to understand who will be using the rail and how, and, without an OT report, we use recognised guidelines and check with you before drilling.

Outdoor steps and paths

Many homes in Leongatha, Korumburra and Mirboo North sit on sloping blocks with steps up to the front or back door. Through winter, timber steps go green and slippery, and concrete steps collect moss in shaded areas. We fit handrails on one or both sides, replace worn or rotten treads, add non-slip strips and clean slippery surfaces. A sturdy rail on the steps you use every day is one of the most effective ways to prevent falls.

Rural and farm homes

On farms around Dumbalk, Poowong, Loch and Nyora, homes are often far from neighbours and help, so a fall can be especially serious. Families sometimes arrange for us to fit rails and safety aids before a parent comes home from hospital. We are happy to coordinate timing with family members who live elsewhere.

Respect and patience

We know having trades in the house can be unsettling, especially for older people or anyone living with dementia or anxiety. We explain what we will do, keep noise and dust to a minimum, take breaks if needed, and are happy for a family member or carer to be present. We clean up fully so the bathroom or hallway can be used as soon as we leave.

Thinking ahead

If you are renovating a bathroom, it is worth adding noggings in the walls during the work, even if rails are not needed yet. That way, rails can be fitted quickly and strongly later without opening the wall. We can advise on positions during a renovation.

Lighting and small changes that help

Not every safety improvement is a rail. Plug-in sensor night lights in hallways, contrasting tape on the edge of steps, a hook by the bed for a walking stick, removing a tripping hazard at a doorway threshold and raising a low letterbox all help. We are happy to suggest small, practical changes while we are there, and we fit only what you agree to.

Bedrooms and living areas

Falls also happen getting in and out of bed or a favourite chair. Bed sticks and rails supplied by a provider, firmer chair arms, and a clear, well-lit path from the bedroom to the toilet at night all help. We can move furniture safely, secure loose rugs or remove them, and fit a rail along the hallway between the bedroom and bathroom where the wall allows.

Do you need an OT report?

Not always. If you have one, we follow it. If not, we use standard guidelines and talk with you about the right position.

Can you work with a Home Care Package or NDIS provider?

Yes. We can supply quotes and invoices as required. Check with your provider about their process.

Can you build a ramp?

We can build small timber ramps over low thresholds. Larger ramps may need a builder and must meet specific gradients.

Can you install rails recommended by my occupational therapist?

Yes. We follow the OT’s specifications and contact you or the OT if anything needs to change because of the wall construction.

Can you fit a grab rail on a tiled wall?

Yes. We drill the tiles carefully, fix into framing or noggings and seal around each fixing.
