Winter in the hills
South Gippsland is green for a reason. Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North and Poowong get plenty of rain, much of it falling in the cooler months, and the hills catch cold south-westerly winds straight off Bass Strait. Homes on exposed ridges and older weatherboards feel it most. A few jobs in autumn make winter a lot more comfortable.
Gutters and downpipes
Gutters full of leaves overflow at the first heavy rain, sending water down walls and into eaves and foundations. Clean gutters before winter, and again if you have big trees nearby. Check downpipes are connected and clear and that water drains away from the house. If you have a rainwater tank, check leaf strainers.
Draughts
Most heat loss in older homes is through gaps. Check:
- Door bottoms: fit draught seals or door snakes
- Door and window frames: replace worn weather seals
- Gaps around skirting and architraves: caulk them
- Old sash windows: adjust and seal
Sticking doors and windows
Timber swells in wet weather, and reactive clay moves as it gets wet. Doors that close easily in summer often stick in winter. A light plane and hinge adjustment usually fixes it. If cracks are opening in walls at the same time, keep an eye on them; large or growing cracks may need a building inspector.
Damp and mould
Bathrooms, laundries and south-facing rooms are most at risk. Run exhaust fans, open windows when you can, and treat mould early. Replace mouldy silicone rather than painting over it.
Paths and decks
Moss and algae make paths, steps and decks dangerous in winter. Pressure washing in autumn helps. Check handrails are firm.
Before the first storm
Secure loose outdoor items, check fence posts and gates, and trim back light branches near the house (large trees need an arborist).
