Bathroom accessories are small but they get daily use. Towel rails come loose because they were screwed into plasterboard with no fixings. Toilet roll holders sag. Mirrors hang crooked. Shower shelves drop. Robe hooks pull out of the back of the door. And fitting new accessories often means drilling into tile, which many people would rather not attempt.
Leongatha Handyman fits and repairs bathroom fixtures and accessories in homes across Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Meeniyan, Inverloch and the surrounding towns. We drill tile carefully, use the right fixings for the wall behind, and leave everything level and solid.

Drilling into tile
Drilling tile is the part most people are nervous about. Glazed ceramic and porcelain tiles crack if drilled the wrong way. We use tile bits suited to the tile type, start slowly to avoid skating, drill without hammer action and keep the bit cool. Where possible, we position holes in grout lines or in the centre of a tile, away from edges.
Fixing into the wall behind
What is behind the tile matters as much as the tile itself:
- Timber studs give a solid fixing for heavy items and grab rails.
- Plasterboard or villaboard without studs needs the right hollow-wall anchors.
- Brick and masonry needs masonry plugs.
Grab rails must be fixed into solid structure. We locate the studs or, where none are in the right place, discuss alternatives.
Replacing old accessories
Updating tired chrome accessories with a matching set in a new finish is a quick way to refresh a bathroom. We remove the old items, fill and seal old holes where possible, and position new accessories so they cover the old fixing points where we can.
Mirrors and cabinets
Large mirrors are heavy and need secure fixings. We hang mirrors with suitable clips or brackets, and fix mirror cabinets into studs or with heavy-duty anchors.
Accessibility in the bathroom
Bathrooms are where most falls at home happen. For older residents, people recovering from surgery and anyone with limited mobility, grab rails beside the toilet and in the shower, a shower seat and a hand-held shower bracket at the right height make a big difference. See our aged care and disability rails page for more.
Rentals and holiday houses
Loose bathroom fixtures are common rental maintenance requests. We fix them quickly and send photos. In holiday houses, we can fit extra hooks and rails to cope with wet beach towels and swimmers.

What we do not do
We do not replace taps, toilets, basins or shower mixers, as that requires a licensed plumber. We do not wire heated towel rails or exhaust fans, as that requires an electrician. We can fit the accessories and brackets once those trades have done their part.
Small bathroom upgrades without a renovation
A full bathroom renovation is a big job, and in South Gippsland it can mean weeks without a bathroom and a long wait for trades. Many bathrooms do not need that. Replacing tired accessories, fitting a new mirror cabinet, adding storage and resealing the shower can make an older bathroom look and work much better in a day or two.
Leongatha Handyman installs and replaces bathroom fixtures and accessories in homes, rentals and holiday houses across Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Meeniyan, Inverloch and the surrounding towns.

What needs a plumber or electrician
Some bathroom jobs are reserved for licensed trades in Victoria. Anything that involves changing water supply or drainage, such as moving a tap, replacing a mixer, installing a new toilet suite or replacing a vanity basin and waste, needs a licensed plumber. Heated towel rails that are hard-wired, exhaust fans, lights and new power points need a licensed electrician. We can fit a plug-in heated towel rail to the wall near an existing power point, and fix new accessories around plumbing and electrical work done by others. If you are unsure, ask and we will tell you who you need.
Fixing to tiles
Most bathroom walls are tiled, at least partly. Drilling tiles takes the right bits and technique. We mark positions carefully, use tape and diamond or tile bits at a slow speed to stop the bit wandering, and avoid drilling grout lines that can crack or weaken. Behind the tile we fix into studs or noggings, or use anchors suited to the wall, and seal the holes so water cannot get into the cavity.
When an old accessory comes off, it often leaves holes in tiles. We can reuse holes where they line up, fit covers or plates over them, or fill and colour-match small holes so they are less noticeable. Replacing a single cracked tile is possible if you have spares, though matching an older tile can be difficult.
Damp bathrooms and corrosion
Many older bathrooms in Leongatha, Korumburra and Mirboo North lack good ventilation. Combined with long, cold winters, this leads to condensation, mould and corroded metal accessories. Cheap chrome-plated towel rails and holders often rust or pit within a few years. When replacing them, it is worth choosing stainless steel or quality brass with a durable finish. On the coast, in Inverloch, Venus Bay and Tarwin Lower, the salt air makes this even more important, especially in outdoor showers and beach-house bathrooms that sit closed for weeks.
Ventilation is the root cause of most bathroom mould. If your exhaust fan is weak or not ducted outside, ask a licensed electrician to check it. In the meantime, opening a window after showering and wiping down surfaces makes a big difference.
Mirror cabinets and storage
A mirror cabinet adds storage and hides clutter. They are heavier than they look when loaded, so they need solid fixings. We fix into studs or install a timber batten behind the wall where needed. If the cabinet has a light or power outlet, a licensed electrician must connect it; we can hang the cabinet and leave the connection to them.
Over-toilet shelving, recessed niches (in a new build or renovation), and wall-hung cabinets free up floor space in small bathrooms. In older homes, bathrooms are often tiny, so making use of wall space helps.

Toilet seats
Toilet seats loosen, crack and discolour. Replacing one is quick, but the right seat has to fit the pan shape and fixing pattern. Measure the pan or send us a photo, and we can confirm the right type. Soft-close seats are popular, quieter and stop the lid slamming. Some older pans in South Gippsland homes need specific fittings, which we can source.
Accessible bathrooms
For older residents or people with mobility needs, simple changes help: a raised toilet seat, a shower seat, lever handles, a hand-held shower bracket at a better height, and grab rails in the right positions. We can fit these as part of a broader accessibility visit, following an occupational therapist’s advice where one has been provided.
Holiday houses and rentals
In rentals and holiday homes, bathrooms get heavy use and accessories get pulled off walls. We replace broken items with sturdy hardware fixed properly so they last through the next round of tenants or guests. For property managers, we provide photos of the finished work.
Booking a bathroom visit
Make a list of everything you want done in the bathroom and laundry, and gather the products you want fitted. Let us know about any loose tiles, leaks or mould you have noticed. We will plan the visit so everything is done in one trip, and we clean up thoroughly, because nobody wants dust and tile chips in the bathroom.
Laundries too
Laundries in South Gippsland homes often double as the mudroom, drying room and dog room. We fit drying racks, hanging rails, shelving above the machines, hooks for coats and leads, and wall cabinets. Retractable clotheslines and wall-mounted airers are especially useful through a wet winter when washing will not dry outside. We fix them into studs or masonry so they handle the weight of wet clothes.
Outdoor showers and beach houses
Outdoor showers are common at holiday houses in Inverloch, Venus Bay and Tarwin Lower, where they keep sand out of the house. Their hooks, shelves, soap holders and timber screens take a beating from salt, sun and wet towels. We replace corroded hardware with marine-grade stainless, refix loose timber screening and add hooks for towels and wetsuits at a practical height. Any change to the water supply or drainage is plumber’s work; we handle the timber and the fittings around it. A tidy outdoor shower also means less sand and salt carried inside to the main bathroom.
Choosing finishes that last
Brushed stainless, matte black and brushed brass are popular, but quality varies widely. A heavier fitting with solid mounting plates will outlast a lightweight one, especially in a busy family bathroom or a rental. If you want accessories to match, buy them from one range at the same time so the finish and mounting style are consistent. We are happy to look at products with you before you buy.
Where we work
