Carpentry at handyman scale is about the small timber jobs that keep a house working and looking right: a rotten window sill, a missing length of architrave, a set of shelves in the laundry, a new step, a veranda board, a box to hide a pipe, a gate rebuilt from scratch. These are not building projects, but they still need a good eye, sharp tools and a bit of experience with old and new timber.
Leongatha Handyman does carpentry repairs and small builds in homes across Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Meeniyan and the surrounding district. We work with pine, hardwood, MDF and plywood, inside and out.

Working with older homes
The older streets of Leongatha, Korumburra and Mirboo North have plenty of Federation, interwar and post-war weatherboard homes. These houses were built from hardwood and often have detailed mouldings, timber windows, tongue-and-groove lining boards and verandas with fretwork. Repairs to these homes are best done in a way that respects what is there.
That means:
- Repairing rather than replacing where the timber is sound
- Matching board widths and profiles where possible
- Using timber species and finishes that suit the house
- Cutting out only the rotten section of a sill or board and splicing in new timber where practical
Not every period moulding is still made, so sometimes the best option is the closest available profile. We will tell you what is available before starting.
Rot and timber decay
Timber rots where water sits. Common places are:
- Window sills, especially on weather-facing sides
- The bottom of door frames and weatherboards near the ground
- Veranda boards and the base of veranda posts
- Steps and deck boards
- Fascia boards under blocked gutters
We cut out decayed timber, find the cause if possible, and replace it with treated or durable timber, then prime and paint. For small areas of rot in otherwise sound timber, an epoxy filler can be used.
Shelving and storage
Shelving is one of the most useful small carpentry jobs. We build and fit:
- Laundry shelves above the washing machine
- Wardrobe shelves and hanging rails
- Garage and shed shelving for tools and storage boxes
- Pantry shelves
- Floating shelves fixed into studs
- Bookshelves in alcoves beside fireplaces, a classic use of space in older homes
Small builds
We take on simple builds that do not need a building permit, such as raised vegetable beds, garden steps, timber screens, bin enclosures and small storage boxes. If something does need a permit or structural sign-off, we will say so.
Tools and finish
Good carpentry is mostly in the measuring, cutting and fixing. We use sharp blades, quality fixings and the right adhesive for the job. Nail holes are filled, joints are tight, and the work is sanded and ready for paint, or primed and painted if that is part of the job.

Carpentry repairs around the home
A lot of what keeps a house working is timber: skirting, architraves, door frames, window sills, steps, shelves, cupboards, fascia boards, verandah posts and gates. Over time, timber gets knocked, rots, warps or simply wears out. Leongatha Handyman carries out small to medium carpentry repairs and improvements for homes, farms, rentals and small businesses across Leongatha and South Gippsland.
We are a handyman service rather than a building company, so we focus on repair, replacement and small builds. Major structural work, extensions and anything requiring a building permit should be done by a registered builder, and we will tell you if your job falls into that category.
Timber and the South Gippsland climate
The Leongatha area is green for a reason. Rainfall is reliable, winters are cool and wet, and humidity stays high for months. Timber exposed to the weather, or in contact with damp ground, rots much faster here than in drier parts of Victoria. Window sills, the bottom of door frames, verandah posts, the ends of fascia boards and the lower weatherboards on the south side of a house are classic problem areas.
In the hills towns such as Mirboo North, Korumburra, Loch and Poowong, homes on exposed ridges cop driving rain from the south-west. In valleys and along creeks, such as around Dumbalk and Meeniyan, moisture can hang around longer in shaded spots. On the coast, salt adds to the problem, corroding nails and fixings so that boards come loose.

- replacing rotten fascia and barge boards at low heights
- building and fitting shelving, storage and simple built-ins
- repairing timber steps, stairs and handrails
- fixing or replacing verandah posts and decking
- making and fitting timber gates
- building simple garden structures: raised garden beds, compost bays, firewood stores and planter boxes
- fitting new internal doors to existing frames
- repairing damaged timber floors and replacing short lengths of floorboard
- building small timber screens and privacy panels
Matching old timber
Older homes in Leongatha, Korumburra and Mirboo North often have skirting, architrave and weatherboard profiles that are no longer standard. When only a section needs replacing, we look for the closest available profile from local suppliers and timber yards, or combine stock profiles to match. Sometimes salvaging and reusing good timber from elsewhere in the house is the best option. We aim for a repair that looks like it has always been there.
Rot repair versus replacement
Not every soft spot means the whole board has to go. Small areas of rot in a window sill or door frame can be cut back to sound timber, treated and filled with an epoxy repair system, then shaped and painted. This keeps original timber and is often quicker. Where rot has spread widely or affects a structural member, replacement is the better choice. We probe and test to show you how far the damage goes and explain the options.
We always look for the source of moisture: a blocked gutter, missing flashing, a leaking downpipe or garden beds piled against the wall. Fixing the timber without fixing the cause means it will rot again.
Firewood stores and farm projects
Many South Gippsland homes rely on wood heaters, so a dry, airy firewood store near the back door is useful. We build simple timber firewood bays with a roof to keep rain off. On small farms and lifestyle blocks around Koonwarra, Dumbalk and Nyora, we also build and repair chicken coops, small sheds, raised beds and timber gates.
Built-in storage and shelving
Older homes often lack built-in storage. Simple shelving in alcoves, a linen press with adjustable shelves or a timber bench and hooks at the entry can make a home far more practical. We design straightforward, sturdy built-ins to suit the space and finish them to be painted or oiled.

Materials we use
We use treated pine, hardwoods, plywood and MDF as suited to the job: treated pine or hardwood outdoors and in contact with damp, MDF for internal painted mouldings, and quality plywood for shelving. Outdoors, we use galvanised or stainless fixings so they do not rust and stain. We buy materials from local suppliers where possible.
Finishing
Timber carpentry needs finishing to last. We prime new timber, especially end grain, before fitting where possible, and can undercoat and paint or oil the finished work. Where you prefer to paint yourself, we leave it ready for painting.
Small jobs are welcome
Carpentry work does not have to be big to be worth doing. Replacing one rotten sill, fitting a single shelf or rehanging a gate is a normal job for us, and we often combine several small carpentry tasks into one visit. If you have a list, send it through with photos so we can bring the right timber and profiles on the day and avoid a second trip. That matters when the job is out at Dumbalk, Loch or Tarwin Lower rather than in the middle of Leongatha.
Doors, windows and frames together
Carpentry often overlaps with door and window work. When a frame has rotted at the base, the door usually drags or will not lock, and the window beside it may have a soft sill as well. Fixing these together in one visit is quicker and gives a better finish, because the repairs can be primed and painted at the same time.

How to get a carpentry quote
Send photos of the area, measurements if you have them and a description of what you want. For rot repairs, a close-up of the damaged timber helps. For shelving and small builds, a rough sketch with dimensions is useful.
Frequently asked questions
Do you match old mouldings?
Where the profile is still available, yes. If not, we find the closest match or discuss alternatives.
Can you replace a rotten window sill?
Yes. We can splice in new timber or replace the whole sill, then prime and paint.
Do you build decks?
We repair decks and build small step sets and landings. Large new decks usually need a builder and a permit.
Do you need a permit for small timber jobs?
Most handyman carpentry does not need a permit. If a job does, we will tell you before we start.
Can you match old skirting boards?
Often, yes. We look for the closest profile from local suppliers or combine stock profiles. Exact matches are not always possible in very old homes, and we will show you options.
Do you build decks?
We repair decks and build small low-level decks and platforms. Larger or elevated decks that need a permit should be done by a registered builder.
