Gutter Cleaning

In a district with this much rain and this many trees, gutters fill quickly. When they block, water spills over the front edge, splashes against walls and footings, soaks into eaves and, in heavy rain, backs up under the roof sheets and into the ceiling. Full gutters also hold dry leaves along the roofline over summer, which is a genuine ember risk on bush-edge properties.

Leongatha Handyman cleans gutters on single-storey homes, units and small commercial buildings across Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Meeniyan, Inverloch and the surrounding South Gippsland district. Every clean includes the downpipes, a flush test and photos of the result.

Why gutters block around Leongatha

Rainfall

South Gippsland is one of the wetter parts of Victoria. Leongatha and the Strzelecki foothills get steady rain through autumn, winter and spring. Gutters carry a lot of water, and any blockage shows up quickly as overflow.

Trees

Mirboo North sits among tall mountain ash and blue gum country on the Grand Ridge. Korumburra, Leongatha and Poowong have established gardens with big eucalypts, cypress windbreaks and deciduous trees. Eucalypts drop leaves, bark and gumnuts all year round. Deciduous trees drop everything in autumn. Cypress needles form a dense mat that blocks outlets.

Moss and sludge

Leaf litter that sits in a damp gutter breaks down into a heavy black sludge that grows moss. It holds water against the gutter, rusts steel gutters from the inside and makes them sag.

Wind

Strong westerlies and southerly changes blow leaves and bark onto roofs even where there are no trees right next to the house.

Coastal sand and salt

Homes near Inverloch, Venus Bay and Tarwin Lower get wind-blown sand and salt in the gutters, which speeds up corrosion.

What a gutter clean includes

1. Safe access. We use a stable ladder with stand-offs so the ladder rests against the roof edge or wall, not the gutter. On low, gentle-pitch single-storey roofs we may work from the roof where it is safe.

2. Debris removal by hand. Leaves, sludge, moss, gumnuts and sticks are scooped out and bagged. We do not blow it all into your garden beds.

3. Downpipes. Each outlet is cleared and the downpipe is flushed with a hose to confirm water flows through to the ground.

4. Flush test. Water is run along the gutter to check it drains towards the outlets and to spot leaking joints.

5. Condition check. We note rust, sagging, leaks, loose brackets and damaged downpipes.

6. Photos. Before and after photos are sent with the invoice, which is especially handy for landlords, holiday house owners and anyone who cannot see their gutters from the ground.

7. Clean-up. Bagged debris can be taken away or left in your green waste bin, as you prefer.

Minor repairs while we are up there

  • Re-fixing loose or sagging gutter brackets to restore the fall
  • Sealing small leaking joints and corners
  • Re-fixing loose or disconnected downpipes
  • Fitting leaf strainers at downpipe outlets
  • Fitting simple gutter guards on short runs

Replacing whole lengths of rusted gutter, re-roofing or work on roof sheets is a job for a roof plumber. We will let you know if we see anything that needs one.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

  • Most homes in town: once or twice a year, usually late autumn after the leaves fall, and late spring before summer.
  • Homes under big trees or near bush: two to four times a year.
  • Before fire season: late spring is a good time for properties near bush, grassland or plantations, including around Mirboo North, Dumbalk and the Strzelecki foothills.
  • Holiday houses: before summer and again after autumn.

Gutter cleaning and fire preparation

Dry leaves in gutters can catch embers carried ahead of a fire. CFA advice for people in bushfire-prone areas includes keeping gutters clear as part of preparing the property. A clean in late spring, followed by a check in mid-summer if trees are dropping heavily, is sensible for properties on bush edges. We can combine gutter cleaning with clearing debris from around the house, as part of a fire-season preparation visit.

Single-storey only

We clean gutters on single-storey buildings. For two-storey and steep roofs, a specialist with roof anchors and harness systems is the right choice, and we are happy to recommend that you find one.

Gutter guards

Gutter guards reduce how often gutters need cleaning, but they do not eliminate it. Fine debris and moss can still build up on or under the mesh. If you are thinking about guards, we can explain the pros and cons for your trees and roof type.

Signs your gutters need attention

  • Water spilling over the front of the gutter in rain
  • Plants or grass growing in the gutter
  • Stains on walls or eaves below the gutter
  • Sagging gutter sections
  • Water pooling around the base of the house
  • Birds or rats nesting in the gutters

Areas we cover

We clean gutters in Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Meeniyan, Koonwarra, Dumbalk, Inverloch, Tarwin Lower, Nyora, Loch, Poowong and rural properties nearby.

Booking a gutter clean

Send the address, tell us if the home is single-storey and roughly how big it is, and whether there are large trees nearby. Photos of the roofline help us quote accurately. If you are not home, we just need safe access to the yard.

Gutters in a high-rainfall district

Leongatha and the surrounding hills receive regular rain through autumn, winter and spring. Blocked gutters cannot cope with that volume: water overflows into eaves, behind fascia boards and down walls, and can find its way inside. Gum leaves, bark, moss, seed pods and windblown debris build up quickly, especially in homes surrounded by trees in Mirboo North, Koonwarra and along the Strzelecki foothills.

Clear gutters and downpipes protect the roof, fascia, walls, foundations and garden. They also matter for bushfire preparedness, because dry leaves in gutters can catch embers.

When to clean

For most homes in the area, cleaning gutters at least twice a year makes sense: once in late autumn after leaf fall and before the heavy winter rain, and once in late spring before the fire danger period starts. Homes under large trees may need more frequent cleaning. Holiday houses at Inverloch, Venus Bay and Tarwin Lower that are surrounded by coastal tea-tree and banksia can fill up quickly too, and owners often do not notice until there is a problem.

Rainwater tanks

Many homes on the outskirts of towns and on rural properties in South Gippsland rely on rainwater tanks for household water. Clean gutters, leaf guards, first-flush diverters and tank screens all help keep debris and contaminants out of the tank. We clean gutters and downpipes and can clear and refit tank inlet screens. Tank cleaning and water quality testing are separate specialist services.

What a gutter clean includes

1. Safe access set up with ladders and, where needed, roof anchor points or harness systems.

2. All gutters cleared by hand and with tools, with debris bagged rather than tipped into garden beds.

3. Downpipes tested by running water through and cleared if blocked.

4. Valleys and box gutters checked and cleared where reachable safely.

5. A visual check of the gutters, brackets, fascia and roof for problems such as rust, sagging, loose sheets or cracked tiles.

6. Photos of anything that needs further attention.

We take the debris away or leave it bagged for your green waste, as you prefer.

Problems we often find

  • gutters sagging or falling away from the fascia, so water pools instead of draining
  • rust holes in older galvanised gutters
  • joints leaking where sealant has failed
  • downpipes disconnected at the stormwater pipe, so water soaks the ground next to the house
  • overflowing box gutters on older homes
  • rotten fascia boards behind the gutter
  • moss growing on the roof and washing into gutters

Small repairs such as resealing joints, refixing brackets and reconnecting downpipes can usually be done on the same visit. Replacing long runs of gutter or roof repairs is a job for a roof plumber, and we will recommend one if needed.

Gutter guards

Gutter guards reduce how often gutters need cleaning, but they do not eliminate it. Fine debris, moss and seed pods still collect, and some guards trap leaves on top. Before installing guards, the gutters should be clean and in good condition. We can clean under existing guards and refit them, and advise whether guards suit your roof and trees.

Fire season preparation

South Gippsland has a history of serious bushfires, and areas near the Strzelecki Ranges and coastal scrub have significant fire risk. Before each summer, clearing gutters is one of the simplest steps on the CFA’s recommended preparation list. We can combine a gutter clean with clearing leaves and debris from around the house, under decks and against walls.

Safety on the roof

Gutter cleaning involves working at height. We use proper ladders, stabilisers and fall protection, and we will not access a roof that is unsafe because of steepness, wet weather or condition. Two-storey homes and steep roofs may need extra equipment. Please do not risk climbing ladders yourself if you are not confident; falls from ladders are a common cause of serious injury in older homeowners.

Rural properties and sheds

Farm sheds, garages and outbuildings also have gutters that fill up. We clean these as part of the same visit where safe access is possible, which is useful on properties around Dumbalk, Poowong and Nyora where sheds often feed water tanks.

After the clean

We send photos and a short note on what we found, so you know the condition of your gutters and roof edges.

Storm season checks

Before the spring and summer storm season, a quick check that downpipes are connected and flowing helps avoid water damage when a heavy downpour hits. Storms in recent years have shown how quickly overflowing gutters can push water into ceilings across South Gippsland.
