A full house repaint is a job for a painting company. But much of the painting that homes actually need is smaller: a scuffed hallway, a door that has been painted around for years, a bathroom ceiling with mould spots, walls patched after moving out, a single bedroom that needs a new colour. Those jobs are often too small for a painter to schedule, and that is where a handyman fits.
Leongatha Handyman does small painting jobs and touch-ups across Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Meeniyan, Inverloch and the surrounding South Gippsland towns. We often combine painting with plaster patching, door repairs and other small jobs, so the whole list is finished in one go.
Painting jobs we take on
- Touching up walls after plaster repairs
- Repainting single walls, feature walls or small rooms
- Doors, door frames and architraves
- Skirting boards
- Bathroom and laundry ceilings with mould or peeling paint
- Water-stained ceilings after a leak has been fixed
- Hallways and entries scuffed by daily use
- Cupboard doors and shelving
- Window frames and sills inside the house
- Small exterior jobs such as a front door, a gate, fence sections, veranda posts or a letterbox
- Freshening up rentals between tenants
- Pre-sale touch-ups before photos and inspections
Preparation makes the job
Good painting is mostly preparation. Paint over grease, dust or mould will peel. Paint over gloss without sanding will scratch off. Fresh patches that are not primed will show through. Our process is:
1. Protect. Drop sheets on floors and furniture, tape where needed and move items clear.
2. Clean. Wash walls and trims to remove grease and grime. Kitchens, hallways and children’s rooms often need more than they look like.
3. Repair. Fill holes, cracks and dents, and sand them smooth.
4. Treat mould. Clean mould with an appropriate treatment and let the surface dry.
5. Sand and prime. Lightly sand glossy surfaces, then prime patches and bare areas. Stain-blocking primer goes on water marks.
6. Paint. Usually two coats for an even finish.
7. Clean up. Remove tape, clean edges and tidy the room.
Matching existing paint
If you still have the original paint, or know the brand and colour, touch-ups are much easier. Even then, paint that has been on the wall for a few years fades and a fresh patch can stand out. For the cleanest result, we repaint from corner to corner, or the full door, so there is no visible edge. Where the paint is unknown, a sample can often be matched at a paint store.
Choosing the right finish
- Ceilings: flat or matt ceiling white
- Living areas and bedrooms: low sheen washable acrylic, which hides minor imperfections and wipes clean
- Bathrooms, laundries and kitchens: paint formulated for wet areas with mould resistance
- Doors and trims: semi-gloss or gloss enamel, water-based or oil-based to suit what is already there
Older homes often have oil-based enamel on doors and trims. Water-based paint will not stick properly over it without preparation, so we test and prime accordingly.
Painting in older homes
Many homes in Leongatha, Korumburra and Mirboo North were built well before 1970 and may have lead-based paint under later layers. Sanding lead paint creates hazardous dust. If we suspect old lead paint, we will raise it with you and use a safe approach, or recommend a specialist for larger areas. We will not dry-sand suspected lead paint.
Bathroom ceilings
The bathroom ceiling is one of the most common small painting jobs we see. Steam and poor ventilation cause mould spots and peeling paint, especially in older homes and holiday houses that sit shut up. We clean and treat the mould, scrape off loose paint, prime and repaint with a mould-resistant ceiling paint. We will also check whether the exhaust fan is working and suggest an electrician if it needs replacing.
Exterior touch-ups
Large exterior repaints are best left to a painting company with scaffolding. Smaller exterior work is fine for us:
- Front doors and screen doors
- Window sills and frames on single-storey homes
- Veranda posts, rails and fretwork
- Gates, fence sections and letterboxes
- Garage doors and side doors
- Weatherboard spot repairs after a board has been replaced
Coastal homes near Inverloch, Venus Bay and Tarwin Lower take a beating from salt air and wind, so we use exterior products suited to the conditions.
Painting for landlords and sellers
Between tenancies, a fresh coat on scuffed walls and doors makes a rental look cared for and helps it lease. For sellers, painting tired areas is one of the best-value improvements before photos. We can work to a tight timeframe and send photos when finished.

Colour advice
We are not interior designers, but we can tell you which neutral colours tend to work well in rentals and pre-sale homes, and which finishes are more practical in busy areas. If you are choosing a new colour for a room, we recommend testing a sample patch on the wall first and looking at it at different times of day.
How we quote painting
Send photos of the area, the approximate size of the room or wall, and tell us whether the walls need patching. We will quote clearly and tell you whether we recommend a touch-up or a full wall or room. Painting is often quoted alongside other jobs on your list.
Painting in a damp climate
Paint performs differently in South Gippsland than in drier parts of the state. Long, wet winters mean exterior paint on the south and west sides of a house weathers faster, timber swells and shrinks, and mould grows on painted surfaces that do not get sun. Inside, bathrooms, laundries and bedrooms with poor ventilation develop mould spots on ceilings and around windows. Good preparation and the right products matter more here.
Interior touch-ups
- patching and painting holes, dents and cracks
- repainting scuffed walls in hallways, stairs and kids’ rooms
- touching up doors, frames and skirting
- painting ceilings with water stains once the leak is fixed, using a stain-blocking primer
- treating and painting over mould in bathrooms and laundries, using mould-resistant products
- painting new plaster or timber repairs to blend in
Exterior touch-ups
- repainting weathered window sills, frames and doors
- spot repairs on weatherboards after rot repairs
- painting fences, gates, letterboxes and handrails
- touching up fascia boards and barge boards at accessible heights
- repainting front doors to refresh the entry
- oiling or staining decks and timber screens
Large exterior repaints, multi-storey work and full-house painting are best done by a registered painter. We focus on repairs and touch-ups, and smaller rooms and areas.
Preparation is everything
A paint job is only as good as the surface underneath. We clean surfaces, scrape loose and flaking paint, sand, fill and prime before painting. On exterior timber, bare patches are primed with an exterior primer before top coats. On glossy surfaces, we sand or use an adhesion primer so the new paint does not peel.
Lead paint in older homes
Homes built before 1970 may have lead-based paint, especially on window frames, doors and exterior timber. Many older homes in Leongatha, Korumburra and Mirboo North fall into this category. Sanding or scraping lead paint creates hazardous dust. If we suspect lead paint, we will test it before disturbing it and follow safe work practices or recommend a specialist, particularly in homes with children or pregnant women.
Matching paint
The easiest touch-ups are when you have the original paint or know the colour and brand. If not, we can take a small chip of paint to a local paint store for colour matching. Sheen level matters as much as colour: a low-sheen wall touched up in flat or semi-gloss will show. Where an exact match is not possible, repainting a full wall from corner to corner gives an even finish.

Mould on ceilings and walls
Black mould spots on bathroom and bedroom ceilings are very common in South Gippsland winters. Painting straight over mould does not work; it grows back through. We clean and treat the area with a mould killer, let it dry, apply a stain-blocking primer and finish with a mould-resistant ceiling or bathroom paint. Improving ventilation is the long-term fix, and we will point out where it is lacking.
Doors, frames and trims
Doors and frames in busy households get marked and chipped. Repainting them in a durable enamel or water-based semi-gloss refreshes a hallway quickly. We can remove doors, paint them flat for a smooth finish and rehang them.
Fences, gates and outdoor timber
Timber fences, pergolas, decks and garden furniture benefit from oil, stain or paint to protect them from the weather. We clean and prepare the surface, then apply the finish you choose. In coastal areas such as Inverloch and Venus Bay, regular recoating is especially important because sun and salt break down finishes faster.
Rentals and sale preparation
Freshly patched and painted walls make a big difference at the end of a lease or before a sale. We patch, sand and paint marks, holes and cracks, and send before-and-after photos to landlords and property managers.
Clean and tidy
We protect floors and furniture with drop sheets, mask carefully, and clean brushes and rollers away from your drains. Leftover paint is labelled and left for you to use for future touch-ups.
Weather and timing
Exterior painting needs dry weather and surfaces that have dried out. In South Gippsland that usually means late spring to autumn, and we watch the forecast closely. Interior work can be done year-round.
Where we paint
Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North, Meeniyan, Koonwarra, Dumbalk, Inverloch, Tarwin Lower, Nyora, Loch, Poowong and surrounding rural areas.
Frequently asked questions
Do you paint whole houses?
No. We focus on touch-ups, single rooms, doors, trims and small exterior items. For a full house repaint we recommend a painting company.
Can you match my existing paint?
If you have the paint or know the colour, yes. If not, we can have it matched from a sample. For the best result we often repaint the full wall so there is no visible edge.
Can you paint over mould?
Not directly. Mould must be cleaned and treated, the surface dried and then primed before painting. We do this as part of the job.
Do you supply the paint?
Yes, or we can use paint you already have.
Is lead paint a concern in older homes?
It can be in homes built before 1970. We will not dry-sand suspected lead paint and will talk through safe options with you.
